UCSB Caps Off Successful Gaucho Round-Up With Annual Fundraising Dinner

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The Gauchos capped off their first successful outdoor meet of the season this past weekend with a wonderful fundraising dinner that included friends and family of the UCSB track and field team. The event included a dinner with cocktails along with a silent auction with proceeds that went to the Gaucho Fund.

Both the men's and women's team accumulated enough points to hold a comfortable lead through the meet, the men totalling 174.5 points and the women with 170 points. Many of the athletes won their respective events with several of the freshmen having strong performances in their first collegiate outdoor meet. Freshman Michael Aiken won both the 100m and 200m events and freshman Zachary Logan won the pole vault at 15-0.

Junior Grace Esslinger had a great start to the outdoor season with wins in both the Javelin at 131-6 as well as the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.96. Senior Michael Guerra dominated men's javelin with his monstruous throw of 196-10.25. Mitchell Haag, Max Villalba and Mike Larocca swept the men's high jump with Haag's winning clearnace at 6-8.75.

"It was a really nice day on Saturday, I was satisfied with every aspect, the meet went very well, the team acted like a team at the meet, showing great spirit and everyone made a point to comment on that," comments Head Coach, Pete Dolan.

Following the meet, the Gaucho Round-Up transitioned into its annual fundraising dinner with the athletes themselves exchanging their warm-ups and jerseys for semi-formal dress and aprons. The event which was held at the UCSB University Center in the HUB included a dinner with cocktails followed by a silent auction with all of the proceeds going towards the UCSB track and field team through the Gaucho Fund. A slideshow showcasing many of the athletes who competed in the 2010-11 season was a treat the athletes as well as friends and family were able to enjoy.

"The fundraising dinner was a great way to end the night. The parents had a great time, the kids had a great time serving and it was just an all around a successful day," noted Dolan.

The Gauchos will return to the track in two weeks and will head to UC Irvine to compete in the All-UC meet on March 3rd.
