Nwaba Headlines Big West All American Selections

From the Big West Conference Office
Irvine, Calif. - Four Big West track and field athletes were named to the annual USTFCCCA All-America First Team following their success at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, last week.  Three additional student-athletes received All-America Second Team honors and five field participants were placed on the All-American Honorable Mention list.

On the men's side, rivals for the past four years, UC Irvine's Charles Jock and UCSB's Ryan Martin, picked up the first team honors following the domination of the 800-meter.  Jock took a first-place finish, the first for Irvine in 34 years, with close competition Martin placing fourth.

Two individuals on the women's side, one field and one multis athlete, were recognized as first team All-Americans.  Barbara Nwaba finished second in the Heptahlon with 5,927 points in the seven-event competition.

Cal Poly's John Prader (Pole Vault), UC Riverside's Ryan Swafford (Triple Jump) and UC Davis' Sarah Sumpter (10,000) represented the league on the second team and Long Beach State's Ben Woodruff (Javelin) and Katrina Graves-Johnson (High Jump), UC Riverside's Travis Smith (Shot Put) and Caleb Stuart (Hammer) and Cal Poly's Whitney Sisler (High Jump) nabbed honorable mention accolades.

Up next for the four Big West All-America First Team recipients is an opportunity to capture an Olympic qualifying mark at this year's U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., which takes place June 22-July 1.
