SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's and women's track and field teams will be well-represented at the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas on May 23-25 as they will send 12 athletes who will compete in 14 events and two relay teams.

Leading the Gaucho contingent at the regional will be senior women's thrower Irene Kujore, who qualified in the shot put (51' 7.75"), discus (166' 4") and hammer (193' 5").  She won all three events at the Big West Championships.

Senior Jennifer Carey, who won the 400 meters at the league meet, is the highest qualifier among the UCSB women.  Her best time of 52.29 ranks seventh those running in the event at the West Regional.  The second highest qualifier for the Gauchos is senior Amanda Rodriguez whose time of 58.32 in the 400 meter hurdles ranks her ninth.  Junior Danielle Moreno's best time of 34:27.81 in the 10,000 meters earned her a ticket to Austin as well.

In addition to the individuals advancing to the Regional, the women's  4x400 meter relay squads will advance.  That foursome will include Carey, Rodriguez, Grace Esslinger and Tori Usgaard.

The highest qualifier among the men, and overall for that matter, is senior high jumper Mitchell Haag, a repeat Big West champion, who is ranked fourth with his best leap of 7' 2.5".

Junior Jordan Scott will enter the 400 meters with a best time of 46.44.  He will be joined on the track by sophomore Shyan Vaziri in the 800 meters (1:50.17), senior Juan Paredes in the 1,500 meters (3:45.79), freshman Bryan Guijarro in the 10,000 meters (29:41.04), junior Sean Johnson in the 110 meter hurdles (14.28) and senior Jimmy Martin in the 400 meter hurdles (52.76).

In addition to Haag and the runners, senior Derek Masterson's best throw of 218' 4" has qualified him in the javelin.

Like the women's team, the Gaucho men's 4x400 qualified for the Regional and they will be represented by Scott, Martin, Winton Nguyen and Eric Severiano.
