Heptathletes and Decathletes prepare for Big West Championship
Santa Barbara, Calif- Three UCSB combined event specialists will head to UC Davis this Friday and Saturday, May 9-10 for the Big West Combined Event Championships. The trio will include sophomore heptathlete Tori Usgaard, sophomore decathlete Ike Okpara and freshman decathlete Darion Williams.
The decathlon will start at 1:30pm on Friday May 9.
Decathlon Day 1 events:
Day two will start at 11am on Saturday, May 10.
Decathlon Day 2 events:
The heptathlon will start at 1PM on both days.
Day one of the heptathlon includes the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m.
Day two includes the long jump, javelin and the 800m.
Tori Usgaard will compete in a field of 14 athletes including the Big West Conference leader,Kaleigh Morrison from Hawaii. Morrison has a score of 5186 which she amassed at the California Invitational. Usgaard comes into the championship ranked second in the Big West with a score of 4968. Sitting third on the Big West list is Danielle Littleton from UC Riverside with a score of 4928.
In 2014, Usgaard has hit new bests in 5 of the seven heptathlon disciplines. Usgaard was fourth at the Big West Championships one year ago. At last year's Big West ChampionshipUsgaard was called to relay duty, helping the Gauchos set the school record in the 4 x 400m and qualify for the NCAA First Round. They would go on to reset the school record in Austin, TX with a time of 3:38.86.
Ike Okpara and Darion Williams will compete in a field of eight for the honors of the deciding the Big West's top all-around athlete. Okpara has established a new personal best score this spring of 6254. Okpara has set new personal bests in eight decathlon disciplines this spring. Okpara is also ranked 5th in the conference in the high jump with a leap of 6'6.25.
Darion Williams has a season best score of 6184 which he set at the California Invitational Multi Events. Williams was a former state finalist for Vista Murrieta High School where he also excelled on the gridiron. In 2012, Williams was voted as the Inland Empire's Press-Enterprise Male Athlete of the Year after guiding Vista to the CIF State Championship in football.
Big West Championship
The remaining portion of the Big West Championship will be held next weekend, May 16-17 at UC Davis.
