Amanda Moreno-Babineaux, one of the most decorated distance runners in UCSB history, will be going into her third season as an assistant coach with the Gauchos. Amanda works with the men’s and women’s cross country teams as well as each of the distance groups on the track. She brings a wealth of experience as one of the top former runners in the conference, and will play a strong role in developing the young men and women in the distance events. Amanda will also oversee recruiting and front office administrative duties.
Moreno made an instant impact on the program, bringing in a distance class of 18 student athletes in her first recruiting class for 2012-2013.
Two seasons later her efforts were put on display as Moreno helped guide sixteen different UCSB runners to Big West scoring positions at the 2015 Big West Championship. Those athletes would capture nine Big West medals and three conference titles including gold medal winners Dani Moreno (10k), Bryan Guijarro (10k) and Bryce Rausa (3,000m steeple).
Since Moreno's arrival, the UCSB cross country programs have thrived- Putting five men in the top-nine, the UCSB men captured the 2014 Big West Cross Country Championship with the lowest score in school history, 21 pts.
Moreno was a three time Big West Champion while running for the Gauchos. She claimed the Big West 5,000m outdoor title in 2011 and also won the 2010 Big West Cross Country Championship, capping a stellar season with an appearance at the NCAA Championships. She is the former Big West Conference record holder in the 5,000m with a time of 15:58.02, which she set at the Mt. Sac Relay’s in 2011. She also holds the Big West Cross Country Championship meet record in the 6,000m. Amanda is the UCSB school record holder in the 5,000m.
Moreno is one of three athletes in Big West history to break 20 minutes in the 6,000m at the Big West Cross Country Championships. She ran 19:57.0 at the 2010 Big West Championships.
She graduated from UCSB in 2012 with a degree in Philosophy and a minor in Applied Psychology. Before coming to UCSB, Moreno won 6 Western Athletic Conference titles while at the University of Nevada-Reno and holds the 5,000m school record for the Wolf Pack. Prior to Nevada she was the CIF XC State Champion and 3,200m CIF runner-up while attending Escalon High School. She is married to Brad Babineaux.
