ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -
Barbara Nwaba claimed second place in the high jump last weekend at the New Mexico Classic held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. She cleared 5'10.5" which qualifies for NCAA provisional status set at 5'10". Those athletes who jump at least 6'0" automatically qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships and those who score above the provisional mark fill the remaining spots.
Nwaba's performance in the high jump also ties her personal best set at the UW Invitational in the 2010 season and is also good for third on the Gaucho all-time list.
Nwaba also competed in the long jump placing 11th overall with a jump of 18'0.25" as well as the shot put with a throw of 44'7.50". She also ran in the 4x400m relay, with teammates Jennifer Carey, Jessica Johnson and Sheneice Vargas, placing seventh with a time of 3:58.27.
Senior Maureen Ajoku scored 3,482 points to capture fourth place in the indoor pentathlon this last weekend.
Ajoku managed to place top 10 in all five events that make up the pentathlon. She placed eighth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.44 followed by a third place performance of 5'4.5" in the high jump event, a half inch off of her personal best, set at the Sam Adams Combined Meet in 2009.
In the shot put, Ajoku threw 34'11.74" on her first attempt, placing sixth. In the long jump, Ajoku took third with a mark of 17'9.50". She went on to place sixth in the 800m run with a time of 2:35.25.
In the triple jump, Tayler Williams took seventh with a jump of 37'3.75" and Symone Evans placing 12th by jumping 35'4". Jennifer Carey took 13th place in the 800m by running 2:22.17.
In the 400m dash, Jessica Johnson took 13th overall with a time of 57.54, Sheneice Vargas placed 20th by running 58.80 and Danielle Fessenden finishing 29th with a time of 1:00.05.
The New Mexico Classic marks the second indoor meet that only the women sprinters and field athletes compete in at the start of the season. This year's NCAA Indoor Championships will be held at College Station, Texas March 11-12.
The 2011 outdoor track and field season for the Gauchos will begin in two weeks with the Fourth Annual Gaucho Round-Up on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Westmont College. The fundraiser kicks-off with the track and field meet at 11 a.m. at the Westmont Track and continues with the Round-Up at 4:30pm at Corwin Pavilion on the UCSB campus. The event has been the track and field program's main fundraiser and includes cocktails and dinner as well as a silent auction featuring items and gift certificates donated by the Santa Barbara community.
