Last Time
The Gauchos were in San Diego last weekend for the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The highlight of the meet was Scott Finley breaking the UCSB pole vault record with his clearance over 17'2" (5.25m). The previous pole vault record of 16'7" had stood for more than 34 years; Brady Lock cleared that bar in 1976. Other highlights included Irene Kujore becoming only the second Gaucho to throw over 15 meters in the shot put with her mark of 49'7" (15.11m), Tayler Williams winning the triple jump with a mark of 39'7.25" (12.07m) and the women's 4x400m relay squad winning with a seasonal best time of 3:46.91.

This Week's Meet
The Gauchos will participate in a dual meet against the Cal Poly Mustangs in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The meet will begin this Saturday, May 1 at 10:00 a.m. at Cal Poly's Track and Field Complex. The meet will be scored and a men's and women's team winner will be announced upon the meet's conclusion. This is the only dual meet of the season for the Gauchos.

On The Horizon
The Big West Championships officially begin next week with the multi-event (decathlon and heptathlon) competitions. On Friday May 7 and Saturday May 8, decathletes and heptathletes from across the Conference will compete at Cal State Northridge. Team points are awarded in the multi-events, with the winners picking up 10 team points and second through eighth place picking up smaller amounts. While the multi-events are occurring, the Gauchos will also send athletes to the Occidental Invitational on Saturday May 8. At this meet, athletes will have their last chance to either qualify for the Big West Championships or improve their seedings for the Championships. The Big West Championship Meet will take place on May 14 and 15 at Cal State Northridge.

We Have Clearance
Scott Finley was named the Big West Field Athlete of the Week following his clearance of 17'2.50" (5.25m) in the pole vault at the UCSD Triton Invitational. Finley broke a UCSB record that stood for 34 years and became the first Gaucho to clear 17 feet in the pole vault. He currently leads the Big West, is 12th in the West and 20th overall in the NCAA on the pole vault performance lists.

The Irene Scene
Irene Kujore picked up her second-straight Big West Field Athlete of the Week award after her strong performances in the shot put and discus at the UCSD Triton Invitational. Kujore threw 49'7" (15.11m) in the shot put, becoming only the second Gaucho to throw further than 15 meters in the shot. She currently leads the Big West by more than two feet and is 22nd in the West in the shot put, accompanying her rank of 6th in the discus at 171'6" (52.27m). At the Triton Invitational she threw 168'11" (51.48m) in the discus.
