UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball coach Kathy Gregory and two Gaucho players – Erica Lau and Katey Thompson – discussed UCSB, the volleyball program and playing at Division 1 to a group of high school students earlier this week.
The intention was to educate high school volleyball players the importance of a quality education and the challenges all student-athletes face, especially those at UCSB, which was recently rated the seventh-best collegiate institution in the nation – and the No. 1 public institution.
Gregory, a coaching legend who has spent her entire career at UCSB, and Lau and Thompson spoke to the Chatsworth High team about their experiences and how their respective time as Gauchos have positively shaped their lives. They all emphasized how working together as a team and at a university has helped them prepare for what lies ahead in the future.
"Erica and Katey did a tremendous job sharing their experiences of what it truly means to be a student-athlete at UCSB," Gregory said. "They each represented the Gauchos with class and related how their time at this special place has helped mold them into better athletes, and more importantly, better people."
The Chatsworth High coaches wanted their players to get a first-hand view of what it means to go to college and possibly play volleyball in college. Several months ago, when the Chatsworth coaches planned their tour of UCSB, they made it a point to have Gregory speak with the group.
