Gauchos Split Final Two Matches of LMU Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Gauchos finished the Loyola Marymount Tournament with a 2-1 record after falling in straight sets to the UConn Huskies before sweeping the host Lions to close out the tournament.

With their 2-1 record, UCSB tied with Loyola Marymount for the best record in the tournament.

Junior outside hitter Leah Sully led the way for the Gauchos in the nightcap. Sully recorded a match-high 14 kills, and considerably improved on her attacking from the morning match, when she recorded a .000 hitting percentage.

Junior middle blocker Jenna Wilson found a groove in the night match, picking up a match-high eight blocks.

Freshman libero Taylor Formico paced the Gauchos with 26 digs and was flawless in her serve reception.

UCSB held Loyola Marymount to a lowly .067 en route to their straight sets victory.

There were less positives to be taken away from the morning game against the Huskies. The Gauchos hit just .039 as a team and had no players over seven kills.

In the loss, Leah Sully accrued a career-high 30 digs and picked up a pair of service aces.

For UConn, Mattison Quayle dominated the match to the tune of 20 kills and 11 digs. Madeline Kuppe chipped in 14 kills of her own.

Following the last match, both Leah Sully and Taylor Formico were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts.

The rest of the All-Tournament team included Loyola Marymount's Betsi Metter and Kat Luft, Iona's Caris Myles and Catrina Warren, and UConn's Mattison Quayle and Jackie Wattles.

Next weekend, the Gauchos will open up the Thunderdome to host the UCSB Invitational. Participating schools include Idaho, Northeastern, and UCLA. Matches will take place on Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sep. 1.
