• UCSB Invitational Multimedia
For this weekend's tournament, fans of all four schools will be able to catch the action in
a variety of ways. UCSB will be providing a live video stream of the entire tournament
through the Big West. The streaming feed can be found at http://www.bigwest.org/tv. UCSB will also provide live stats for the tournament, accessible via the schedule page for
Women's Volleyball on www.ucsbgauchos.com. Lastly, KCSB will be calling UCSB's Saturday
matches. Both broadcasts can be heard online at http://www.kcsb.org/webcast, while
the 7 PM match against UCLA can also be heard over the air on 91.9 FM.
• UCSB Invitational Ticket Information
There are multiple ticket options for fans at this weekend's tournament. An all-session
pass that covers all matches from Friday through Sunday will cost $20 for adults and $15
for youth, seniors, and military. A one-day pass will cost $12 for adults and $9 for youth,
seniors, and military. Tickets are currently unavailable online and must be purchased in
person at the event.
• They Are the Champions
Saturday's matchup against pre-season No. 1 UCLA will be the first time UCSB has faced
off against a defending national champion since Nov. 6, 1999, when they lost to Long
Beach State in four games. Since 1981, the Gauchos have a 5-17 record when playing
defending national champions.
• Young and Able
Following the season-opening weekend, freshmen top each major statistical
category in the Big West except total kills. Included among them
is UCSB freshman libero Taylor Formico, who leads the conference in
digs at 7.00 per game. Formico parlayed her 70-dig weekend at the LMU
Invitational into an All-Tournament selection.
• Exorcising Old Demons
Though most of the women on the 2012 UCSB roster were in elementary
school the last time that the Gauchos took on UCLA, the Bruins
have been a consistent thorn in Kathy Gregory's side. The Gauchos sport
a .170 winning percentage against UCLA, but UCSB has actually managed
to win the last three matches in the series that took place in the friendly
confines of Santa Barbara.
• Quick Starters
One staple of Kathy Gregory volleyball over her tenure has been a good
start out of the gate. The same has held true this year- with the seasonopening
victory, Gregory is now 27-6 in the first match of the season
• New Blood
For the second consecutive year, the Gauchos will be fielding a roster
with seven freshmen, tied with UC Riverside for the most first-year players
in the Big West Conference. Many freshmen will be expected to
assume key roles on the team, including setter/opposite Jaylen Villanueva,
libero Taylor Formico, and middle blocker Britton Taylor.
• Poll Returns
The Gauchos received the fourth-most votes in a preseason poll of
Big West coaches. They had been tabbed third in both 2011 and 2010.
Hawai'i, newcomer to the Big West, immediately jumped to the top of
the poll. Hawai'i has won three national championships since 1981, bringing
another powerhouse program to the conference.
