• UCSB Invitational In Review
Last weekend, the Gauchos hosted the UCSB Invitational, welcoming UCLA, Northeastern,
and Idaho to campus. The Gauchos went 2-1 over the weekend, their only defeat
coming against No. 3 UCLA. Katey Thompson led the way for UCSB, earning an All-
Tournament berth and a nomination for Big West player of the week. Thompson compiled
44 kills, four aces, 30 digs, and 11 blocks on the weekend. UCSB setter Ali Santi also
was named to the All-Tournament team. Santi's best match came against Idaho, when she
picked up a whopping 57 assists. Junior outside hitter Leah Sully was also a major contributor,
leading the squad in both kills (45) and aces (seven) over the weekend.
• Digging For Gold
As is usually the case, passing has been a point of strength for the Gauchos so far this
season. As a team, they rank first overall in the Big West in digs per game (19.73) and
second in fewest reception errors (0.8 per game). They also boast the number one individual
dig-per-game rate (Taylor Formico's 6.18 a game). Leah Sully checks in at No. 5
(4.55 per game).
• Flawless Record
The Gauchos are a perfect 8-0 combined against their two Oregon opponents
this week. However, this will be UCSB's first matchup against
Oregon in the rally scoring era, last playing them in 1983. Their six wins
against Portland St. are the third most wins they have against any opponent
without having been defeated.
• Excellent Service
Through the first six matches of the season, a clear disparity has emerged
between the Gauchos and their opponents- their serving games. So far,
the Gauchos have accrued 36 service aces, second most in the conference.
against 34 errors. Their opponents have picked up just 17 aces
against them, while racking up 39 errors. Leah Sully is tops on the team
and in the conference in total aces at 12.
• The Wilson Blockade
Junior middle blocker Jenna Wilson has been a constant tormentor for
opponents thus far. Jenna ranks first in the conference in total blocks
(30) and blocks per game (1.36). The second place blocker is a whole six
blocks behind Jenna. Wilson's efforts are a main reason why the Gauchos
rank fourth in the conference in team blocks per game at 2.27 and second
in lowest opponent's hitting percentage at .156.
• New Blood
For the second consecutive year, the Gauchos will be fielding a roster
with seven freshmen, tied with UC Riverside for the most first-year players
in the Big West Conference. Many freshmen will be expected to
assume key roles on the team, including setter/opposite Jaylen Villanueva,
libero Taylor Formico, and middle blocker Britton Taylor.
• Immediate Effect from Meddaugh
Elizabeth "ZZ" Meddaugh, a redshirt freshman for the Gauchos, made
her UCSB debut last Saturday against UCLA. She made an immediate
impact, earning a block assist on her very first point.
