SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After leading the Gauchos to an upset road victory over No. 5 Hawai'i on Friday, Katey Thompson received player of the week honors from the Big West and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. Thompson had a career night in Honolulu for UCSB, as she tallied a career-best 26.0 points with her 19 kills and match-high 11 total blocks.
The historic upset gave UCSB its first win over the Hawai'i since 1994 and also snapped the Rainbow Wahine's 41-match win streak in conference play.
"These are much deserved honors for Katey, and I credit the entire team for their efforts to put her in a position to receive it," UCSB Head Coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. "Katey was consistently reliable for us in the match and came up with so many huge kills and clutch blocks, none bigger than the last three points at the end to make sure we completed the upset."
As she has done throughout Big West play, Thompson stepped up for the Gauchos in the match-deciding game. She accounted for UCSB's final three points of the fifth with a solo block, a kill, and the match-clinching block assist.
Adding to her work on offense and at the net, Thompson recorded seven digs and an assist. Performing well at the service line, the senior led the Gauchos on many runs and also dealt a service ace.
The Newport Beach averaged 3.8 kills and 2.2 blocks per set against Hawai'i.
UCSB will carry their three match win streak into the Thunderdome this weekend when they host Cal State Northridge (Friday, Oct. 18) and UC Davis (Saturday, Oct. 19).
Tickets for the matches can be purchased at the Ticketing Office in the Intercollegiate Athletics Building, on the phone at 805-893-UCSB, or online here.
