Women's Volleyball to Honor 1973, 1974 Teams at Hawai'i Match

The Gauchos will be both seeking and honoring history this Saturday when they host no. 12 Hawai'i in the Thunderdome. With a win over the Rainbow Wahine, it would mark the first time in program history that UCSB defeated Hawai'i at home since 1993.

Besides the pivotal Big West matchup, the Gauchos will also be celebrating the accomplishments of the 1973 and 1974 women's volleyball teams that both finished third-place nationally in their respective seasons. All the players, as well as coach Chris Accornero, who will be in attendance during Saturday's match are listed below.

Before the team's time in the NCAA, the Gauchos played in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), which included modern-day powerhouses UCLA, Texas, and Hawai'i. Even while competing against the top teams in the nations, UCSB managed to emerge as one of the elite programs in the mid-1970s.

Led by Head Coach Accornero, the Gauchos defeated UCLA for the first time in school history and finished with a 24-5 record in 1973. UCSB would defeat the Bruins later in the season to claim third-place in the AIAW Tournament.

With all the players returning for the 1974 season, UCSB had the experience to match its talent and registered a 31-9 record. The Gauchos also shined in the postseason, as they downed the defending national champion Long Beach State in the AIAW quarterfinals. Later in the tournament, the Gauchos would clinch their second consecutive third-place national finish with their victory over the University of Houston, which was led by volleyball great Flo Hyman.

Don't miss any of the Gaucho action. You can get your tickets today, visit the Ticketing Office at the Intercollegiate Athletics Building on campus, call 805-893-UCSB (8272), or click here.
