SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball has earned an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2016-17 year, it was announced on Monday morning.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
UCSB was the only program in the Big West to receive the prestigious award.
Gaucho women's volleyball has earned academic recognition throughout the year. UCSB placed a league-high seven players on the Fall 2016 Big West All-Academic Team and had six players named to the AD Honor Roll this spring. Two veteran members of the program, Sydney Bast and Phoebe Grunt, were selected for both awards while Grunt was also the team's Golden Eagle (top GPA on the team) winner.
