UCSB Captures Pair of Wins on Second Day of the San Diego State Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara volleyball team rebounded from Friday evening's loss to San Diego State with a pair of wins on Saturday over first-time opponents Long Island and Fairfield, both by way of a 3-1 score, as it closed out action at the SDSU Aztec Invitational in Peterson Gym.
UCSB (2-1) faced the Blackbirds of Long Island (1-1) in the first match of the day. The Gauchos took the first two games by scores of 30-24 and 30-26, respectively, before falling 30-28 in the third game. UCSB came back and captured game four by way of a 31-29 score.
The Gauchos out-hit Long Island .369 to .243 in the match, posting an impressive .500 clip in game two and hitting .459 in the final frame. UCSB also out-blocked its opponent 14-4.
After leading the Gauchos with 22 kills on Friday evening, junior outside hitter Lauren McLaughlin once again put up the top numbers for UCSB hitting .370 on the match with 19 kills, 10 digs, six block assists and a service ace. Freshman Charlene DeHoog caught stride as well with her .500 clip (13 kills on 20 attempts with just three errors). Rounding out the group with double-digit kills was sophomore Rebecca Saraceno with 15 and junior Brett Quirarte, who hit a team best .526 with 12 kills and posted seven blocks. Quirarte also led the team with a pair of aces.
For Long Island, Shelby Heggie hit a match-high .531 with 19 kills while Martina Wagner had a match-high 25 kills with four aces. Svetlana Simic tallied 27 digs for the Blackbirds.
UCSB recovered from a 31-29 loss in game one versus Fairfield (0-3) in Saturday's second match by sweeping the next three games, 30-24, 30-17 and 30-14.
McLaughlin was once again a force offensively as she landed a career-high 27 kills with an efficient .410 clip. She also collected 11 digs for her third consecutive double-double of the season and recorded an additional six blocks, including two solo versus the Stags. Vargas posted 51 assists accompanied by 15 digs and six block assists in the match.
Quirarte was also impressive with 10 kills, a .421 clip and eight blocks. Stephenson tallied 19 digs while freshman Caitlin Saxton also helped out with 15 scoops of her own.
Kelly Oliver led the Stags with 10 kills and 12 digs and Lindsey Lee also posted a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs on the match.
UCSB once again utilized strong blocking as it out-stuffed Fairfield 21-1 with freshman Kasey Kipp leading the way with nine block assists and one solo block. The Gauchos continued their solid hitting posting a cumulative .308 clip versus Fairfield's .098 hitting percentage.
The SDSU Aztec Invitational All-Tournament Team included both McLaughlin and Quirarte.
The Gauchos will continue their 12-match road swing next Friday when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif. for the LMU Four Points Sheraton LAX Classic where they will face UNLV, host Loyola Marymount and Northwestern. UCSB will open at home versus Cal State Northridge on Sept. 21.
