SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team failed to take a set from its opponent for the second consecutive match, falling to No. 23 San Diego, 3-0, in the second leg of the USD Invitational Saturday afternoon at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Set scores were 28-26, 25-23, and 25-11 in favor of the Toreros.
With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 5-6 overall while the Toreros improve to 7-3 having won their fifth consecutive contest.
Mimi Cuttrell led the Gauchos with nine kills, four digs and a pair of blocks. All-American setter Dana Vargas dished out 30 assists on the day while also connecting on all five of her attack attempts. Lily Lopez topped the Gauchos with a .333 (4-1-9) hitting percentage while Stacey Schmidt swung at a .238 (8-3-21) clip.
For USD, outside hitter Ali Troost led all players with her 17 kills on 25 swings, posting a .680 attack percentage with no errors. Chloe Ferrari and Ashton Basch also recorded double-digit kills with 10 apiece. Amy Mahinalani DeGroot scooped a match-best 20 digs and Kelsi Myers recorded 39 assists.
After falling behind early in the first set, the Gauchos went on a 10-1 run to reach set point at 26-25. However, two kills from Troost and a UCSB attack error would give the first set to USD, 28-26, despite UCSB out-hitting the Toreros .256 to .224.
UCSB would carry the momentum from late in the first set over to the second set, racing out to a 4-1 lead. USD overtook UCSB at 6-5, and the teams battled until the score reached 23-23. Another attack error by UCSB would give the Toreros a slight lead, and Basch was able to seal the set off a pass from Myers, giving USD a 25-23 set-two victory.
USD would close the match on a 12-0 run in the third set, making quick work of the Gauchos by a margin of 25-11. UCSB hit just .033 in the final frame compared with USD's .500.
The Gauchos close the USD Invitational on Saturday night at 7 p.m. against San Diego State at Peterson Gym.
