SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On Saturday, UCSB Athletics honored its first Legend of the 'Dome, putting the dominant Roberta Gehlke further into Gaucho history - she is the only women's volleyball player to have her number retired and is in UCSB's Hall of Fame - and later in the evening the Gauchos could have used her.

Following the touching ceremony, which included unfurling a 20-foot banner along the Thunderdome's south wall, UC Davis defeated UCSB 25-19, 23-25, 14-25, 25-21, 18-16, handing the Gauchos their first defeat at home this season.

UC Davis improves to 15-7, 6-2 in the Big West while UCSB falls to 14-5, 4-3.

"We let it go," UCSB head coach Kathy Gregory said. "What more can you say? It's going to catch up to you when we can't close out matches, up two games to one."

Rebecca Saraceno led all players with 28 kills, hitting at a .362 clip, while also tallying nine digs, falling just shy of recording her 12th double-double of the year. The senior was the only Gaucho to record double-digit kills, as Leah Sully had eight and Kasey Kipp added seven. Kipp also had a solo block and four block assists.

Sully led UCSB with 14 digs while Chelsey Lowe had 12 and Dana Vargas had a dozen. Vargas also had 52 assists.

After jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the fifth set, UCSB saw the Aggies claw their way back into it, using a service error and two UCSB attacking errors to even things up. The Gauchos had match point at 16-15, but Davis' Allison Whitson recorded a kill, followed by another from Kayla Varney before Sully's hitting error ended things.

However, the entire night was not a loss as Gehlke became the first of five "Legends" to be unveiled at the Thunderdome. Four others will join her along the walls - two each from women's and men's basketball. To find out the schedule of the next unveiling, please click here.

Gehlke is UCSB's all-time leader in kills with 2,153, first in kill average at 4.67 per game, and is second all-time in digs with 1,619. Always the go-to option during her career, she also holds the all-time single match kill record with 38, doing so against Long Beach State. During her career the Gauchos posted an amazing four-year record of 112 wins and just 26 losses.
