SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team was unable to overcome defending Big West champion Cal Poly on Thursday evening, as the Mustangs posted a 30-21, 30-23, 23-30, 30-17 win over the Gauchos at Mott Gym. With the victory, Cal Poly sweeps this season's series with UCSB.
The Gauchos fall to 10-16 on the year and 5-8 in the Big West. Cal Poly improves to 18-7 and maintains its lead in the conference with its 12-1 mark.
Senior Brett Quirarte led the Gauchos in points posting 13 kills, one service ace, and six total blocks. Junior Lauren McLaughlin posted 16 kills and seven digs while sophomore Rebecca Saraceno chipped in her 14th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs in the match.
For the Mustangs, Kylie Atherstone hit an impressive .455 with 32 kills on 55 attempts with seven errors. Ali Waller posted a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs to go with her two aces and three total blocks. Setter Chelsea Hayes handed out 64 assists while Kristin Jackson tallied a match-high 28 digs.
Game one saw eight early ties and three lead changes before the Mustangs broke a 9-9 tie with 6-3 run to lead 15-12. The Gauchos chipped away at their deficit and a Cal Poly attack error brought them within one point at 17-16 before the Mustangs once again distanced themselves, this time with an impressive 9-0 run, which included three aces from Gaby Rivera. UCSB was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 30-21 in the first game. The Mustangs hit a match-best .516 during the game, committing just one error.
Cal Poly broke an 11-11 tie in the second game with a 4-1 run to gain the first substantial lead of the frame. The Gauchos got back within one point at 15-14, but that would be the closest they would come as they fell 30-23.
UCSB got on the board first in the third frame and quickly jumped out to an early lead. UCSB held the Mustangs off for the entire frame, hitting a match-best .316. Three consecutive kills from Quirarte brought the Gauchos to game point at 29-23 before a kill from Vargas sealed the win at 30-23.
Cal Poly opened game four on fire. After Kasey Kipp tallied the first kill, the Mustangs went on a 9-3 run to grab the lead. Cal Poly further distanced itself with a 6-0 run to further its advantage to 19-9. The Mustangs controlled the remainder of the frame and came out with a 30-17 victory and the match win.
UCSB continues Big West action on Saturday when they visit UC Irvine for a 7 p.m. match-up.
