Gauchos Take Pacific Down In Three

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A change of venue did not faze the UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team as they captured a three-game sweep over Big West Conference opponent Pacific Friday evening in Robertson Gym with scores of 30-22, 30-24, 30-26. The Gaucho win marked the second of the season over the Tigers.
With the win, the UCSB record is lifted to 15-11 overall and 7-6 in the Big West while Pacific falls to 7-17 and 3-8 in conference.
Senior Olivia Waldowski led the Gauchos with 16 kills on 22 attempts with only one error for an impressive .682 hitting percentage on the night while also adding two blocks. Outside hitter Jamie Garbisch had 13 kills in the win and Lauren McLaughlin notched a double-double on the evening with 10 kills and 15 digs, matching senior libero Emily Hendrickson's dig total for the night.
Leading all players in kills was Pacific's Alexa Anderson who accumulated 19 on the evening with 11 digs. Natalia Tomaszewska and Johanaa Hilbers rounded out the double-digit kill performances with 14 and 11, respectively. Olivia Riley put up 42 assists for the Tigers and Julie Magud tallied 12 digs.
Game one the Gauchos jumped to an early lead as they opened the match with three unanswered points before the Tigers landed their first. UCSB furthered its lead with a 5-1 run featuring two kills by Waldowski and three-straight from McLaughlin to gain an 8-1 advantage. The Gauchos continued to dominate the rest of the frame with Waldowski leading the attack with eight kills on the game while Garbisch put down seven of her own as UCSB outhit the Tigers .296 to .184 to take the first frame 30-22.
The second frame was more evenly fought as the Gauchos and Tigers battled through 12 early ties before, with the game tied at 16-16, the Gauchos were able to put up a 12-4 run spearheaded by three kills from McLaughlin. The Gauchos reached game point, but the Tigers were not done fighting as Hilbers and Masha Vaysburg blocked a Garbisch attack and Tomaszewska landed a kill. Garbisch responded, putting the game away with a kill at 30-24.
Game two, the Gauchos were led by Rebecca Saraceno and McLaughlin who each put down five kills while Pacific's Anderson led all players with six on the frame. UCSB also saw its best hitting of the evening as they outhit the Tigers .375 to .156 in the second game.
UCSB captured the initial lead in game three, but Pacific played catch-up and tied the frame for the first time at 12-12 with a block by Hilbers and Megan MiMack. The Tigers put up three straight points to earn the advantage at 15-12 before UCSB posted a 6-3 run to once again tie things up, this time at 18-18. Pacific climbed out to a 25-21 lead but UCSB tallied a 4-0 run to match Pacific at 25-25. Four Pacific errors and one kill by Quirarte won the game for the Gauchos at 30-26.
The Gauchos will finish their 2006 home schedule on Saturday, November 11 when they host Big West opponent Cal State Northridge in the Thunderdome at 7 p.m. Prior to tomorrow's first serve, UCSB will honor its three seniors, Jamie Garbisch, Emily Hendrickson and Olivia Waldowski.
