Former UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball standout Brooke Niles (now Hanson) finished playing in the main draw of the Brasília Open, the season-opening event on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball calendar.
Hanson, who starred at UCSB from 1999-2002, finished fifth with teammate Lisa Rutledge, far exceeding the tournament's expectations for the U.S. duo who were seeded 31st.
Hanson received close to $9,000 for her finish and it was the first main draw in three tries for Hanson and Rutledge.
Battling back through elimination rounds, the two Brazilian teams won the final quarterfinal matches Friday over teams from Finland and the United States to advance to the late afternoon semifinals. Juliana and Larissa defeated Finland's 26th-seeded Nystrom sisters Erika and Emilia in straight sets, 21-12 and 21-19 in 36 minutes. In their quarterfinal match, the Salgado sisters overcame USA's 31st-seeded Brooke Hanson and Lisa Rutledge in three sets, 21-18, 11-21 and 15-8 in a 55-minute match.
