SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's volleyball team has added another standout prep player to its roster for the 2011 season after Haley Uhland signed a National Letter of Intent.
Uhland, currently a senior at East Nicolaus High near Sacramento, is setter and will be counted on to help replace two-time All-American setter Dana Vargas after the four-year starter at UCSB graduated.
Uhland has been a four-year starter at East Nicolaus and was a three-time team captain.
"We will be having two freshmen come in to a key position," said UCSB head coach Kathy Gregory about Uhland and fall signee Hanna Nielson. "Haley is very athletic. She has great knowledge of the game and she will definitely be able to run our offense. She'll give us a great presence at the net. She plans to enroll immediately to start training and help next season."
Uhland was a two-time All-Area player and was the area's MVP as a senior. She twice helped lead East Nicolaus to league titles and took her team deep into the state playoffs as a junior and senior. Uhland was also named the North vs. South All-Star Game MVP this past year.
For the past three seasons Uhland led the league in assists and assists per game while also leading the team in digs in each of her four seasons. She led all setters in blocks in the Northern Section. She finished first each of the past three seasons in service aces, even serving a perfect 25-0 game at one point during league play.
Uhland has played club volleyball for each of the past nine seasons and served as the team captain each of the past seven years. She has been the starting setter for Cal Synergy most recently, out of Roseville, Calif.
