Gauchos Finish Seventh in the UCSD Triton Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- No. 16 UCSB (8-7) was back in action on Sunday as it wrapped up the UCSD Triton Invitational. The Gauchos faced No. 9 Indiana (7-3) for the second time this season and suffered a tough loss, 7-5. UCSB bounced back later in the afternoon when it also faced No. 19 Cal State Northridge (3-8) for the second time this season, and once again accumulated the win, 10-8.

UCSB faced the Hoosiers in the first game of the day. Indiana scored the first goal of the game, but junior Kacey Creek fired back sinking a goal into the back of the Hoosier net. Indiana responded, and the first quarter ended with the Hoosiers in the lead 2-1.

Gaucho junior Shelby Haroldson scored the first goal of the second quarter. Indiana immediately retaliated, but Creek scored again, ending the first half with a tied score of 3-3.

Indiana came out strong in the second half, scoring the first goal. Freshman Claryann Olofsson-Loo scored the only Gaucho goal in the third quarter, putting it past the Hoosier goalie. After one more scored by the Hoosiers, the third quarter ended with the Indiana leading, 4-5.

Although the Gaucho freshman Lauren Martin scored one more in the fourth quarter, the Hoosiers sunk two more into the back of the Gaucho net. The Hoosiers claimed the victory over the Gauchos, 5-7.

Junior Rachel Nelson scored the first goal in their second game against Cal State Northridge. Sophomore Molly Hafferkamp scored shortly after, sinking the second goal of the game into the Northridge net. The Gauchos came out of the first quarter in the lead, 2-0.

Lauren Martin and junior Nancy Ruano scored back-to-back goals for the Gauchos. The Matadors scored the next three goals, but the Gauchos still had a one-goal lead coming out of the half, 5-4.

UCSB scored the first three goals of the second half. Freshman Bernadette Bevins, junior Bryce Winton and junior Katie Zakula posted the three goals for the Gauchos, and after only one more goal scored by CSUN, the Gauchos remained in the lead, 8-5.
