UCSB Kicks Off the Weekend at the UCI Invitational

IRVINE, Calif.- After having a weekend off, No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (9-8) was back in action as they traveled down to Irvine, Calif. for the UCI Invitational. The Gauchos kicked off their day at 11:30 am when they suffered a tough loss to No. 4 Cal (14-2), 7-3. Luckily, UCSB rebounded back later that day, when they cranked out a win against No 13. UC Davis (3-10), 10-9.

In the first game, the Golden Bears put away the first two goals past the Gaucho defense within the first four minutes of the first quarter. Sophomore Molly Hafferkamp scored the first goal for the Gauchos less than 30 seconds later. Cal responded with a goal, but junior Shelby Haroldson snuck in the last goal of the quarter with a minute left on the clock. At the end of the first, UCSB trailed, 3-2.

Cal scored the only goal of the second quarter, widening the gap between the Bears and the Gauchos, 4-2.

In the beginning of the second half, Cal scored the first two goals of the quarter. Junior Bryce Winton scored the only goal for the Gauchos halfway through the third, leaving the Gauchos trailing by three, 6-3.

Cal scored the last goal of the game, and the Golden Bears acquired the win, 7-3.

Later that afternoon, the Gauchos hit the pool again when they played UC Davis. Hafferkamp’s offense was on point, as she scored the first goal of the game within the first thirty seconds. The Aggies tied up the game with two back-to-back goals shortly thereafter. Hafferkamp struck again when she scored the last goal of the quarter, tying the game for UCSB, 2-2.

UCSB’s junior Rachel Nelson sank the first goal of the second quarter into the UCD goal, putting the Gauchos ahead. The Aggies scored the next goal, but Haroldson responded with back-to-back goals. The Gauchos took a two-goal lead, 5-3.

UCD took the first goal of the second half, but Haroldson accumulated her third goal of the game, keeping the Gauchos ahead. Juniors Nancy Ruano and Katie Zakula proceeded to score two consecutive goals for UCSB. Although the Aggies scored two more goals, the Gauchos remained in the lead at the end of the third, 8-6.

UCD once again scored the first goal of the quarter, but UCSB fought back when Zakula and Hafferkamp scored again, and UCSB took the win, 10-9.

The Gauchos are back in action on Sunday as they complete action at the UCI Invitational. They will play San Jose State at 8 a.m.
