• The Wild, Wild (Big) West
UCSB opened Big West Conference play last weekend in dramatic fashion. The Gauchos and Long Beach State battled through five overtime periods before Shelby Haroldson scored the game-winning goal to secure UCSB a 4-3 sudden victory win. The next day, the Gauchos fell to defending conference champion UC Irvine, 8-4. UCSB carries a 1-1 league mark into this weekend's games, which currently ties the Gauchos for third in the standings with Northridge. UCI leads the conference with a 2-0 record and UC Davis sits in second at 1-0.
• Ruth's A Rock
Junior goalkeeper Ruth Milne had yet another standout weekend in the goal for the Gauchos. She tallied 19 saves in the victory over Long Beach State, three shy of her career-high. In the loss to UC Irvine, she tallied another 15 blocks. Milne has had 17 games this season with double-digit saves. She is averaging 12.2 saves per game this season, which is on-pace to break her school record, which was set last season at 12.0 saves per game.
• Spreading The Wealth
UCSB currently has seven players that have scored 20 or more goals this season. Bryce Winton leads the team with 30 goals and Molly Hafferkamp is a close second with 29. Kacey Creek has 27 while Lauren Martin and Shelby Haroldson have each posted 25. Katie Zakula and Rachel Nelson have both tallied 20 goals apiece.
• Happy To Help You
Shelby Haroldson, who provided last Saturday's heroics against Long Beach State, has been quite the playmaker for the Gauchos. The junior leads the squad with a whopping 47 assists and 46 steals.
• Freshman Phenom
Newcomer Lauren Martin was the only Gaucho to score in both Big West games last weekend, tallying a point in each. The freshman is tied for fourth on the team with her 25 goals and leads the squad with 38 ejections drawn. She has also tallied 23 steals and dished out nine assists.
• Farewell Seniors
Prior to the start of Saturday's game against Cal State Northridge, UCSB will hold a brief ceremony honoring its seniors Elle Quane and Katie Zakula.
• On The Horizon
Following this weekend's home finale, UCSB will hit the road to face the Big West's Northern California members: Pacific and UC Davis on April 14 and 15, respectively. The following weekend, the Gauchos will return to Davis for the 2012 Big West Conference Tournament, which will be played April 27-29. The winner of the tournament receives the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
