Home Games Come to an End, and the Gauchos Score a Pair of Wins
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- It was a beautiful day in Santa Barbara when Gaucho seniors Katie Zakula and Elle Quane played their last two games as Gauchos at Campus Pool. In the first game of the day at 11:30 am, UCSB cranked out a win against Cal State Northridge, 5-3. Later that afternoon, they faced Cal Baptist and accumulated another win, 9-7.
In the first quarter of the game, junior Shelby Haroldson scored within the first two minutes. She proceeded to immediately steal the ball back into Gaucho possession, and Zakula punched the ball into the Matador net less than thirty seconds later. There were no other goals scored, and the Gauchos took the lead, 2-0.
In the second quarter, there was a solo goal scored by CSUN, closing the scoring gap by one goal, 2-1.
The second half began with another goal scored by Haroldson about half way through the quarter. Junior Kacey Creek responded less that a minute later putting a goal past the Northridge goalie. CSUN answered back with a goal, but the Gauchos still led, 4-2.
CSUN scored the first goal of the final quarter, but it was UCSB who had the last word, when Creek scored her second goal of the game. UCSB defeated CSUN, 5-3.
In the first quarter of the second match, the Gauchos came out strong when junior Rachel Nelson scored the first goal of the match. Cal Baptist responded shortly after, putting one in the back of UCSB's net. Within a few minutes UCSB struck again with a goal by Haroldson. The quarter ended on a high note when Nelson scored her second goal of the game. The Gauchos ended the quarter in the lead, 3-1.
Haroldson struck again in the first minute of the second quarter. CBU responded with a goal, but UCSB had the final say in the matter when Molly Hafferkamp scored the final goal of the quarter. UCSB remained ahead 5-2.
CBU took the reigns in the beginning of the second half by sneaking the first goal past UCSB's defense. Zakula scored the next goal, followed by sophomore Justine Ramos who scored her first goal this season for the Gauchos. After a couple minutes of play, UCSB was still ahead, 7-4.
The Lancers tried to make a comeback in the fourth, but the Gaucho defense made sure that their lead was secured. CBU went on a scoring spree, eventually making it a one-goal game, 8-7. Luckily, with 28 seconds left in the game, Creek scored and UCSB secured the win, 9-7.
The Gauchos will be back in action as they take on their last regular season opponents on the road. They will play at UC Davis at noon, on April 14, and at Pacific the following day, also at noon.
