• Opening Week in Water Polo
The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team starts off its 2013 season at Cal State Bakersfield on Friday. After their season opener, UCSB will face a quick turn around as they are slated to face Cal State San Bernardino the very next day in a neutral site contest at Loyola Marymount.
• The Youthful and Exciting Roster
The Gauchos have eight letterwinners returning from last season's squad that finished fourth in the Big West and posted an overall record of 20-15. Much attention will be on the Gauchos' roster this season as eleven talented freshmen have been added to the team.
"As a matter of fact, a very significant number of those freshmen are going to see playing time this year. They are a really skilled class," head coach Cathy Neushul said.
With a good amount of veterans leading the talent filled freshmen class, the team is ready to achieve their goal of placing high in the Big West.
"The recruiting class is really strong," Neushul said. "By far the most talented group of players we have had here in years. With the senior leadership mixed in with the freshmen talent, good things should happen."
• Leading the Attack
Many of the goal scoring leaders from last year's squad will be looking to do much of the same in this year's season. The top returning goal scorers for the Gauchos are senior Kacey Creek who had 38 goals last season, junior Molly Hafferkamp with 35 goals last year and senior Shelby Haroldson who posted 34 goals during the 2012 season. Senior Rachel Nelson and sophomore Lauren Martin will add more offensive depth to the squad.
• Milne Primed to Be a Force in Goal
All-American Honorable Mention and three time All-Big West goalkeeper, senior Ruth Milne returns for her last season in goal for the Gauchos. Already the most accomplished goalkeeper in Gaucho history, Milne is ready to add many more saves to her present career saves total of 992.
