Gauchos Suffer Tough Loss to University of Pacific

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (16-8, 1-1) suffered a tough 10-7 loss to No. 20 University of the Pacific (16-8, 1-1) Sunday morning at Campus Pool. 

The University of Pacific jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first quarter, keeping the Gauchos scoreless. The second quarter was tense as each team fired back and forth goals. Freshman Samantha Murphy opened the second quarter with a quick goal within two minutes of play. Pacific was able to respond with two goals, but the Gauchos tallied three more goals to keep the game tight as the Tigers held a 6-4 lead at half. 

The third quarter was filled with impressive defense on both sides of the pool. Freshman Jessie Porter scored the only goal for the Gauchos, while senior Ruth Milne protected the goal with five saves in the third quarter alone. The Tigers were able to sneak one past the Gauchos with three seconds to play, maintaining the lead going into the last quarter 7-5.

Senior Shelby Haroldson opened the fourth quarter with a significant goal, bringing the Gauchos within one. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to pull away from the Gauchos with four goals in four minutes. Senior Kacey Creek was able to record the last goal of the game before the Tigers gained their first victory in the Big West Conference, 10-7.

UC Santa Barbara heads to Hawaii to play the University of Hawaii on Thursday March 28, 2013. The Gauchos will continue to play three more games in Hawaii against No. 2 Stanford, Sonoma State University, and No. 15 UC San Diego.
