No. 16 UCSB Concludes Regular Season With Loss at No. 14 Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Heading into its last regular season game before the Big West Championships next week, No. 16 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (19-13, 2-5) looked for momentum with a win at No. 14 Cal State Northridge (20-11, 3-3). Despite the strong effort, UCSB could not prevail with the road win as the team suffered a 13-9 loss.

With an early 7:28 goal from freshman Samantha Murphy, the Gauchos took the early lead but could not maintain it as the team trailed the Matadors, 3-2, after the first period.

The second period did not bode well for Santa Barbara as the team could not cut into the Matador lead. With two more goals from Murphy in a span of one minute, the Gauchos were within one of the lead, but Northridge closed the period out strong with two goals of their own, giving themselves a 7-4 lead at the half.

The third period was filled with many close chances for the Gauchos. With a 6:38 and 6:01 goal from senior Kacey Creek, UCSB once again cut the deficit to one goal. After the Matadors increased its lead, the Gauchos kept it interesting with a goal from Rachel Hudson. Heading into the final period, the Matador lead was just, 10-8.

Unfortunately, the Gauchos could not maintain its offensive production in the final period as the team was outscored, 3-1 in the period. In the end, UCSB fell to Cal State Northridge, 13-9.

The Gauchos will head to Irvine next week as they compete in the Big West Tournament, April 26-28.
