UCSB With Big Win Over UC Davis 10-9

IRVINE, Calif. – Coming off a loss to No. 8 San Diego State, No. 16 UC Santa Barbara came out ready to play against No. 18 UC Davis. Freshman Samantha Murphy led the Gauchos with four goals to secure a big victory over the Aggies on the second day of the Big West Conference tournament held at the Anteaters Aquatic Complex.

UC Santa Barbara opened the game with a quick start. Samantha Murphy won the sprint to start the game and scored less than a minute later off a penalty shot. UC Davis was able to come back with two goals to end the quarter 2-1. 

The Aggies started the second quarter with a goal only 50 seconds in. Sophomore Claryann Oloffson-Loo responded to the Aggies goal only ten seconds later to add another goal for the Gauchos. Murphy was able to sneak a goal in shortly after to tie the game 3-3. UCSB was able to score their third goal in a row from freshman Bryn Hudson, taking the lead 4-3 with 4:21 left in the second quarter. UC Davis converted back-to-back goals and took the lead at half 6-4.

Once again, the Aggies opened the third quarter with a fast goal to advance their lead 7-4. Samantha Murphy added another goal for the Gauchos, reducing the Aggies lead to 7-5. UC Davis fired another goal in, taking back the three-goal lead. Sophomore Lauren Martin scored two of her own to lessen the Aggies lead to one, ending the third quarter with the Gauchos down 8-7.

UC Santa Barbara opened the fourth quarter ready to win. Samantha Murphy scored yet another goal to tie the game 8-8. Sophomore Jade Wentz-Fitzgerald barred a goal in the net with 5:08 left in the quarter to further the Gauchos lead 9-8. The Aggies were able to get another goal in before senior Shelby Haroldson scored cross-cage to take back the lead 10-9. The Aggies called a time out in hopes of scoring a goal, but senior Ruth Milne made two huge saves to secure the Gauchos victory over the Aggies 10-9. 

The Gauchos will play for fifth in the Big West Conference on Sunday, April 28, against Cal State Northridge at 12:45 p.m. at the Anteater Aquatic Complex.
