No.18 UCSB Finishes Eleventh at Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif. - With the first day of the Triton Invite under their belts, the Gauchos were unable to defeat No. 17 UC Davis 6-5, but made a huge comback to win in overtime against No. 8 SDSU.

Coming off their victory over Marist the day before, the Gauchos faced No. 17 UC Davis today at the Triton Invite. UCSB started the game fired up, with Freshman Brenna Thomas getting the first goal of the game, followed by Sophomore Samantha Murphy scoring another just 20 seconds after. The Aggies responded with one goal before the end of the first, making the score 2-1 UCSB.

The second quarter began slowly with back-and-fourth shots fired on both goals, until the Aggies were able to get in two consecutive goals. Freshman Jenna Solberg scored the only goal for the Gauchos, making it a tie game at the half.

Sophomore Holly Smith started the game off with a goal for the Gauchos. The Aggies were able to get two more goals on the board, making it 4-6 at the end of the third quarter. Once again it was a back-and-fourth battle between the Gauchos and Aggies, until Freshman Carly Christian was able to get one more goal with 40 seconds left in the game. UCSB fought hard all game, but were unable to defeat UC Davis, leaving the final score a heartbreaking 6-5.

Looking to bounce back from their earlier loss, UC Santa Barbara faced off against No. 8 San Diego State.

The game was a slow start offensively for the Gauchos but played stout defense letting the Aztecs score two goals, ending it 2-0 going into the second quarter. The Gauchos quickly rallied as Sophomore Jessie Porter scored a goal 20 seconds into the game. Samantha Murphy fired another into the goal soon after making it a tie ball game. UCSB's impressive defense only allowed one more goal to be scored by the aztecs, making the score 2-3 Aztecs at half.

Offensive leader this season Junior Lauren Martin started the quarter off by scoring a goal, once again putting the pressure on the Aztecs and making it a tie game. The aztecs quickly fired back with two goals, but was soon to be shut down by Freshman Taylor Shore as she fired in another goal for the Gauchos.

Freshman all-star Carly Christian hammered in two goals during the fourth quarter, as the Gaucho defense only letting in one more SDSU goal brought the score 6-6 leading the teams into overtime. The three minute overtime was a back-and-fourth brawl until Junior Claryann Olofsson-Loo scored the game winning goal with just 25 seconds left in the game. The Gauchos were able to hold off the Aztecs for the remaining time, and ending with a huge 7-6 victory over the Aztecs.

UC Santa Barbara will have a week off before they travel to UC Irvine for the UCI Invite February 22-23.
