UCSB Falls to Long Beach State in First Big West Tournament Game

Long Beach, Calif. No. 13 UC Santa Barbara suffered a tough 12-7 loss to No. 10 Long Beach State in their first game of the Big West Conference Championship Tournament. 

It was a slow start for the Gauchos as the 49ers were able to get off four shots and goals for Long Beach State. Sophomore Miranda Schrader and Sophomore Samantha Murphy were also able to get a goal each for the Gauchos. As the second quarter began, Long beach State was able to overpower the Gauchos and score four more goals before the end of the half. Freshman Jenna Soulburg and Freshman Carly Christian were also able to get a shot and goal each for the Gauchos making the score 5-4 at the half. 

UCSB had a socreless third quarter quarter as Long beach State was able to score three more goals against the Gauchos. Sophomore goalie Mackenzie Brokaw had a solif third quarter, having four blocks. Junior Jade Wentz Fitzgerald had an awesome fourth quarter, picking up the pace for the Gauchos as she made two consecutive goals for the Gauchos. With 13 second left on the game clock, Freshman Taylor Shore was able to get one last goal for the Gauchos. In the end, the Gauchos were unable to defeat Long Beach State, losing 12-7. 

The Gauchos will play for Fifth Place in the Big West Championship Tournament this Sunday against the UC Davis Aggies at 10:30am in Long Beach, Calif.
