UCSB Defeats UC Davis in Fifth Place Thriller

Long Beach, Calif. No. 13 UCSB defeated No. 17 UC Davis 11-10 this morning to take fifth place in the Big West Conference Championship Tounament. 

Sophomore Jessie Porter started off the game for the Gauchos, scoring a goal right off the bat, followed by another goal from Sohomore Miranda Schrader. The Aggies were able to put up two goals of their own making it 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. Freshman Carly Christian scored two minutes into the second quarter on a power play, giving the Gauchos a one-up lead on the Aggies. 

The second half began with the Aggies firing three consecutive shots on the Gauchos, but were soon to be stopped by Sophmore Lauren Martin and Freshman Brenna Thomas each scoring a goal of their own. Martin began the fourth quarter with another goal for the Gauchos, as Porter also firing another shot and goal into the Aggies net. UC Davis were able to get two goals, leaving the Gauchos behind by one with .40 seconds left in the game. Once again, Brenna Thomas and Lauren Martin were able to put away two more goals for the Gauchos, leading the team into overtime against the Aggies. 

As the first overtime period began, Sophomore Bryn Hudson and Jessie Porter scored for the Gauchos making it 10-8. The Aggies were able to respond with another goal as well, leading the teams into the second and last quarter of overtime to play. With the consistent help from Sophomore Goalie Mackenzie Brokaw with 15 saves throughout the game, UC Davis was able to get only one more shot and goal after Carly Christian scored another for the Gauchos, but came up short at the end of the second overtime quarter leaving the 11-10 double-overtime win to the Gauchos. 

UC Santa Barbara ended up getting fifth place overall in the Big West Conference Championship Tournament.
