HONOLULU, Hawaii – Playing No. 8 Hawai'i (11-9, 2-1) in its second Big West game of the season, No. 12-T UCSB (14-8, 0-2) fell by a final score of 8-3. Redshirt senior Miranda Schrader, freshman Abbey Grosse and sophomore Kate Pipkin all scored a single goal for the Gauchos, but it wasn't enough to stop a Rainbow Wahine side that ended the game on a 3-0 run.
The Gauchos' first scratch came in a hectic final minute of the opening period that saw three goals scored in under half a minute of play. After Hawai'i took a 2-0 lead at the :38 second mark, Grosse answered just ten seconds later with her fourth goal in the last three games to make it 2-1.
However, the Rainbow Wahine would take back the momentum heading into the second, scoring with just under ten seconds to go, pushing the lead back up to two goals, 3-1.
UCSB would once again cut the lead to a single score midway through the second, as Schrader scored to make it 3-2 at the 4:07 mark. Once again, the Rainbow Wahine would have an answer, this time scoring two unanswered to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw the Gauchos' defense shutout Hawai'i for the full eight minutes. With 4:21 to go before the fourth, Pipkin put away another UCSB goal to cut the lead to 5-3. However, Pipkin's goal would be the last of the day for the Gauchos, who were outscored 3-0 in the final period on the way to the 8-3 defeat.
UCSB will play two more games in Hawai'i this weekend, taking on No. 12-T San Diego State on Saturday at 10:15 p.m. (PDT) and No. 3 UCLA on Sunday at 3 p.m.
