Former UC Santa Barbara All-American center Lauren Martin was hired as the team's assistant coach on Jun. 29, 2017.
A four-year starter from 2012-16 at UCSB, Martin spent one season playing professionally for the Fremantle Marlins in Perth, Australia. With the Marlins, Martin earned a silver medal in the 2016-17 Australian National Water Polo League season.
"We are very excited for one of our very own Gauchos to return to UCSB," said Kay. "Not only is Lauren one of the best centers the program has ever produced, but she is a born leader and passionate person who has a natural ability to inspire others. These traits, combined with her professional experience, will make her an immediate asset to our coaching staff."
"It is an honor to coach at my alma mater and continue to be part of UCSB Athletics," said Martin. "I am looking forward to coaching and sharing my knowledge of water polo with the team. It is an amazing opportunity to coach under Serela Kay and I am excited for this year."
The Gauchos welcome back Martin after a stellar career at Campus Pool, where she was a two-time All Big West pick, two-time Team MVP, three-time team captain, and 2016 All-American. She played a key part in the program's first-ever Big West Tournament Championship season of 2016, potting a team-high 52 goals en route to Co-Team MVP and All-Big West First Team honors.
In her junior season of 2014, Martin added a team-best 33 goals while recording a single-season program-record 102 drawn ejections.
A model of consistency, the Fresno, Calif. native had 24 or more goals in each of her four years with the program. Her 138 career goals rank sixth-most in UCSB history while she ended her career with a solid .450 shooting percentage.
