Paul Rave

A former member of the UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team, Paul Rave now rejoins the Gauchos in a new capacity - as the interim head coach. Rave joined the Gaucho staff in the fall of 2006 as the assistant men's water polo coach. In his first season with UCSB, he helped the Gaucho men to their first 20-plus win season since 1990. The 2006 men's water polo team posted a 21-14 record on the season, placed fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and ranked sixth in the nation in the final CWPA Poll. Rave was a member of the Gaucho water polo team from 1997 till the fall of 2000. During his senior season, Rave not only served as the team captain, he also was named Most Valuable Player and Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table's Men's College Water Polo Athlete of the Year. Coach Rave was also the recipient of the McCormick Memorial Leadership award in 2000. Prior to attending UCSB, Rave played goalie for the United States Water Polo National Youth Team in 1996 and was the MVP for Eastern High School Championships while a member of the Mount Saint Joseph men's water polo team. Since graduating UCSB with a BA in art history, Rave has spent extensive time on the pool deck as a coach for Santa Barbara Water Polo Club. As the co-head coach for SBWPC's 18 and under boys team, Rave helped lead his team to a gold medal this past summer at the National Junior Olympics. His 18 and under team also captured second place at the National Club Championships and the Winterfest Tournament, both in 2006. Rave also has several years of experience in the classroom; he currently serves as a Special Day Class Teacher with the Santa Barbara County Education Office teaching preschoolers with special needs.
