BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The No. 17 UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team opened the 2008 season with a couple of wins at the season-opening Roadrunner Mini Tournament, which was hosted by Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. The Gauchos defeated Fresno Pacific, 26-3 Saturday morning and followed up with a 14-13 overtime win over Bakersfield later in the day. With the two non-conference wins, UCSB opens the season at 2-0.
The Gauchos opened the first game of the day outscoring Fresno Pacific, 7-1 in the first quarter. UCSB held the Sunbirds scoreless over the next two quarters while tossing in 14 unanswered goals. Fresno Pacific posted a game-high two goals in the fourth as UCSB took the win, 26-3.
Junior Gillian Morgan and sophomore Christie Clark led the Gaucho attack with four goals apiece while freshmen Katie Kepner and Kellsie Arolla each posted a hat trick. Senior Jenny Gonzales and freshman Kate Murphy each played one half in the cage. Gonzales tallied six saves and Murphy posted four.
In the second game of the day against host Cal State Bakersfield, the Gauchos held a narrow 5-4 lead after the first quarter. UCSB spread its lead to 8-5 during the second quarter, but the Roadrunners played catch-up in the third, and tied the game at 9-9. Each team posted two goals apiece in the fourth quarter, forcing the game into overtime.
Bakersfield gained its first lead of the game after scoring the lone goal of the first overtime period, but the Gauchos regained the lead for good as they outscored the Roadrunners 3-2 in the final overtime period to take the 14-13 win.
Morgan once again led the Gauchos with five goals in the win while sophomore Lizzie Roleau posted a hat trick. Gonzales manned the cage for the entire game, posting seven saves.
UCSB will be in action again next weekend when they head to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational, which will be held at the Triton's Canyonview Aquatics Complex, Feb. 9-10.
