No. 16 UCSB Upsets No. 12 Santa Clara, 9-7 in Tournament Opener

San Diego, Calif. - The No. 16 UCSB women's water polo team emerged victorious in its first game of the UCSD Triton Invitational, 9-7 over No. 12 Santa Clara.

The Gauchos got on the board first a minute into the first period when ZiZi Clark put one over Bronco goalie Randahl Capurro. Santa Clara responded two minutes later with a goal from Claire Linney to even the score at one. The Broncos left the first quarter up 2-1 when Maria Jarrell scored with 13 seconds remaining in the period.

Santa Clara went on a 2-0 run to begin the second period with goals before the Gauchos responded with two UCSB goals from Clark and senior defender Aimee Stachowski to bring Santa Barbara within one. The Broncos went into the halftime break up 4-3.

It was déjà vu in the third period with the Broncos opening up the second half with another 2-0 scoring run. The Gauchos responded with 4-0 scoring run with two goals from Stachowski and one each from freshman utility Christie Clark and sophomore defender Katlin Kubas. With that run, Santa Barbara took its first lead of the game, 7-6.

The Broncos tied it at seven with a goal from Linney but the Gauchos added when ZiZi Clark scored her third and final goal of the game with 3:44 remaining in the final period. Christie Clark pushed the Gauchos over the top with a goal with .29 seconds left in the game. Santa Clara was unable to recover and the Gauchos won the game, 9-7.

The Gauchos will go on to play San Diego State on Saturday afternoon with the sprint scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in San Diego.
