Fourth-Quarter Scoring Drive Pushes Irvine Past UCSB, 6-3

Feb. 17, 2007

Santa Barbara, Calif. - It was a battle of the defenses with UC Irvine emerging the victor, 6-3, against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at UCSB's Campus Pool. The Gauchos fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Anteaters improve to 6-1, 1-0 in the MPSF. Irvine's Robyn Kaake and Kat Plummer led all scorers with two goals each.

"We definitely played well on defense," UCSB Head Coach Danielle Altman said. "We only gave up six goals and that's not a lot."

The Irvine and Santa Barbara defenses held off all scoring attempts until the teams were well into the first period. Anteater sophomore two-meter Gianna Ross scored the first goal of the game at the 2:26 mark.

In the second period, neither team successfully capitalized on any of the three six-on-five opportunities. It was Irvine who scored the only goal of the second quarter when Kaake pushed one through with 4:48 remaining in the half.

While the Anteaters went into the second half with a 2-0 advantage, Santa Barbara struck back with a goal from UCSB junior attacker Lindsay Knott (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) within the first two minutes of play. Despite two man advantage opportunities for each team, neither team scored until Kaake scored on a five-meter penalty shot to put Irvine up 3-1.

Santa Barbara scored one minute into the fourth period off a shot from sophomore attacker Alisha Khan (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) to bring the Gauchos within one. Exactly one minute later, Irvine responded with a goal of its own from Kat Plummer. Seventeen seconds later, senior utility ZiZi Clark (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) scored for the Gauchos to keep Santa Barbara in reach, down 4-3.

Irvine put some distance between itself and UCSB later in the fourth period with a goal from Plummer at the 2:29 mark to bring the score to 5-3. The game drew to an exciting end with several narrowly missed goals by both teams before Irvine scored the final goal of the game. Irvine sophomore driver Sarah Frost extended the Anteaters' lead with a goal with 14 seconds remaining in the game to bring to score to 6-3.

Next up for the Gauchos is a nonconference match-up against the visiting Cal State San Bernardino at Campus Pool at 4 p.m.
