SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - San Jose State took a 5-1 lead after two quarters and then held-on to defeat UC Santa Barbara 9-7 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match Sunday afternoon in Santa Barbara.
The tenth-ranked Spartans (4-4 overall, 1-1 in the MSPF) scored on their first possession of the match on a goal by freshman Tanya Torres. After the Gauchos (4-5 overall, 0-3 in the MPSF) tied the score on a goal by senior Jen D'Anna, San Jose State rattled off four consecutive goals to end the half. Senior Katie Morgan scored the first of her two tallies on the afternoon to snap the 1-1 tie and junior Rachel Rhodes scored the first of her three goals to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period. The goals scored by Morgan and Rhodes were scored with a 6-on-5 advantage.
San Jose continued to roll both offensively and defensively in the second quarter. About three minutes in, freshman Juliet Moss hit the back of the net to give her team a 4-1 advantage and then sophomore Brianna Lindsey made it 5-1 just before the end of the half. San Jose's senior goalkeeper Krissy Hansell made six first half saves to give her team a boost in the first 14 minutes.
The third quarter was all UCSB, literally, as the Gauchos outscored the Spartans 3-0. UCSB started the damage first with a goal 1:11 into the third quarter. Just 19 seconds later, D'Anna found the back of the net for her second goal of the match to cut the lead to 5-3. The teams were the scoreless over the next several minutes until junior Allie Carkin fired a rocket past Hansell to pull the Gauchos to within one at 5-4 with 29 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Spartans outscored Santa Barbara 4-3 in the final period. San Jose's Angela Riddle and UCSB's Amanda Tipton traded goals early to make the score 6-5, but then Rhodes scored her second and third goals of the contest, the final one coming with 2:19 remaining, to extend the lead to 8-5 Spartans. The Gauchos made it 8-6 with 1:28 to play, but Moragn responded with her second score to make it 9-6 San Jose. Carkin scored with just nine second s left in the match to give UCSB goal and make the final score 9-7.
The Gauchos return to action on Friday, Feb. 24, when they will host a pair of matches. Brown University will invade Campus Pool at 12:00 p.m. and they will host UC Davis at 4:00 p.m. UCSB will also host the Gaucho Invitation next weekend with matches being played at both Campus Pool and the Recreation Center Pool all day on Saturday and Sunday.
