Gauchos Defeated by No. 5 Cal and Edged by No. 12 Long Beach State

No. 13 UC Santa Barbara suffered a first round loss to No. 5 Cal (7-2) followed by an overtime loss to No. 12 Long Beach State (13-11), today in the UC Irvine Invitational at Corona Del Mar High School.
California defeated the Gauchos with a 4-0 run during the 1st and 2nd quarters. UCSB went scoreless until the third quarter of the game. Gillian Morgan and Lindsay Knott each scored a goal apiece and Jenny Gonzales finished with 7 saves.
The Gauchos fell to No. 12 Long Beach State in overtime during the second round of the tournament. Behind 8-5 at the end of the third, the Gauchos bounced back scoring six goals in the fourth quarter. Morgan and Christie Clark each scored two goals during the fourth quarter while Knott and Lizzie Rouleau each scored one.
The Gauchos went scoreless during overtime play. In the first overtime, the 49ers scored on a six on five opportunity, and in the second overtime scored after a UCSB ejection. The final score was 13-11.
The Gauchos will continue to play tomorrow Sunday, February 24, in the consolation bracket of the UC Irvine Invitational. UCSB will face No. 17 Cal State Northridge, 10:30 am, and play later in the day for a 13th or 14th place finish.
