No. 11 Arizona State Defeats No. 12 UC Santa Barbara in Overtime, 13-11

Irvine, Calif. - Arizona State built up an early lead but the Gauchos returned the favor and tied the game with two minutes remaining in regulation to force overtime. The Sun Devils scored two goals in the first overtime period to overtake the Gauchos and win 13-11 to take 11th place at the competitive Irvine Invitational. Santa Barbara falls to 6-6 overall.

Arizona State struck first in the match, scoring five first-quarter goals to Santa Barbara's one. UCSB's lone goal of the first period came from junior attacker Lindsay Knott. The Sun Devils tacked on two more goals in the second period to give them a 6-1 advantage heading into halftime.

Being down 6-1 in the first half was all it took for the Gauchos to respond and they went on a 3-0 run to open the third period. Santa Barbara got goals from senior attacker Teale Walheim, senior center Sarah Kovach and junior attacker Lindsay Knott, all of which came in the first 2.5 minutes of the third quarter. Arizona State responded with a goal of its own, to which the Gauchos quickly reacted and Kovach tacked on another score for UCSB. The Sun Devils score two unanswered goal to close out the third period up, 9-5.

Freshman utility Christie Clark scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter and bring the Gauchos within two, 9-7. The teams traded goals with Arizona State putting one through followed by a goal from sophomore utility Gillian Morgan. Senior utility ZiZi Clark scored next for UCSB to bring the score to 10-9, still in favor of Arizona State. Christie Clark followed her sister and scored her third goal of the game to knot the score at 10 and force decisive overtime periods.

The Sun Devils were the first to score in the first overtime period but the Gauchos responded and scored one of their own with a goal from Knott, her third of the game. Arizona State scored again to bring the score to 12-11 in its favor at the end of the first overtime period.

Both team's defenses held all scoring until the last minute of the second overtime period. Arizona State's Kim Buck put one through to push the score to 13-11 and win the game for the Gauchos did not score in the remaining time.

Santa Barbara will hit the road again next weekend, this time traveling north to take on UC Davis, Pacific and Cal.
