March 10, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 12 UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team narrowly dropped its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match-up with No. 8 San Diego State Saturday morning at Campus Pool. Sophomore Katlin Kubas tied the game in the fourth quarter, but the Gauchos were unable to hold off the Aztecs falling 4-3.
With the loss, Santa Barbara falls to 8-9 on the season and now holds a 1-3 MPSF mark. San Diego State is now 9-4 overall and 2-2 in MPSF games.
The first quarter saw six power play possessions - three for each team - go unconverted keeping the game deadlocked at 0-0 after eight minutes of play. The Aztecs got rolling in the second with a goal from Becca Ur less than two minutes into the quarter. Teammate Jenna Schuester followed with the second San Diego State goal, a skip shot scored from the left post, less than a minute later putting the Aztecs up 2-0.
On the next possession, sophomore utility player Gillian Morgan cut the San Diego State lead with a power play goal bringing the Gauchos within one heading into halftime.
Schuster opened up the scoring in the second half with a bar-in shot that floated into the Gaucho goal with 5:19 on the clock, but a sweep shot from senior Aimee Stachowski once again cut the Aztec lead to one goal at 3-2.
A little over a minute into the fourth quarter, the Gauchos drew an ejection and Lindsay Knott fired a shot during the power play. Knott's shot hit the post and bounced back out into the field of play where sophomore Katlin Kubas battled the Aztec's goalie for the ball before dumping it over her head to tie the game up at 3-3.
The game remained tied-up for several minutes before Stacy Werner scored the eventual game winner from the perimeter with 2:43 left to play. The Gauchos were unable to convert a final power play opportunity and dropped the game 4-3.
Gaucho goalie Jenny Gonzales recorded nine saves in the loss, Aztec goalie Sarah Kilgore also tallied nine blocks.
Santa Barbara will play two more games today as part of their own Mini Tournament. They will take on No. 15 UC San Diego at 1:30 p.m. and Claremont at 4:30 p.m.
