No. 11 Arizona State rebounded from its Friday 7-6 loss to UCSB with a 12-6 victory over the visiting No. 12 Gauchos on Saturday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatics Center. The Gauchos fall to 12-11 overall.
Santa Barbara opened the game by winning the spring and a goal from sophomore defender Amanda Tipton 1.13 minutes into the match. The teams traded goals with sophomore utility Gillian Morgan adding one for UCSB to tie the score at two at the end of the first stanza.
The Sun Devils shut out the Gauchos in the second period with four unanswered goals to give ASU a 6-2 advantage heading into the second half. Santa Barbara scored two goals -- one from senior defender Aimee Stachowski and another from senior attacker Allie Carkin -- but the Sun Devils scored three to give them a 10-4 lead at the end of three.
Santa Barbara won its fourth sprint of the game and opened the fourth period with a goal from Stachowski to cut UCSB's deficit to five, 10-5. The Sun Devils scored their final two goals of the game bringing the scored to 12-5 in their favor. Senior attacker Teale Walheim scored a 5M penalty shot after an Arizona State brutality with one second remaining but it was too little too late and the Sun Devils emerged victorious, 12-6.
