NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - - In a battle of first place teams in the Big West conference, it was the underdog who had the upper hand as No. 16 Cal State Northridge (19-11, 3-0) upset No. 15 UC Santa Barbara (19-9, 2-1), 8-7 in a conference match at Matador Pool. Later in the day, the Gauchos would ultimately forfeit a game to the Cal Baptist Lancers (24-12) in a non-conference game that was officially ruled a 5-0 victory.
UCSB played a close first period in game one against Northridge with Kathryn Nelson tying the game at one with 3:44 left in the first period. Claire Buchanan then notched two goals for the Gauchos as they took the 3-2 lead with just over a minute left in the period.
In the second quarter, the Matadors stole the momentum and held UCSB scoreless, while scoring two goals of their own.
In the third and fourth periods, the Gauchos' Bryce Winton stole the show as she recorded three goals in seven minutes. Yet it was too late and the hole was too big for UCSB as the comeback fell short and the Matadors recorded the victory, 8-7.
In a day where three teams would each play one another, it was Cal State Northridge who earned two wins and hand the better hand against Cal Baptist and UCSB.
These two teams were scheduled to play each other for the late match and as both teams were coming off losses they equally desired a win.
The Lancers started the game off strong scoring the first goal just over a minute into the game. The teams went back-and-forth in scoring as UCSB scored twice with goals from Buchanan and the Lancers scored twice with goals from Kylie Chevalier and Petra Kovacs.
Christie Clark recorded her first goal of the day to start the second period. The goal would tie the Gauchos at three but 26 seconds later the Lancers took the lead again.
Nelson would once again tie the game for the Gauchos at four but just before the halftime, Kovacs scored again and the Lancers took a 5-4 lead into halftime. To start the second half the Lancers would claim their largest lead of the game off a goal from Christina Webb as they went up by two, 6-4.
Shelby Haroldson pulled the game to within one with a goal at the 4:50 mark of the third period. Tania Acavedo scored one more goal for the Lancers before UCSB scored four goals in a row. Nelson and Winton recorded the first two goals to end the third period.
Then to start the fourth period Nelson scored again and Nancy Ruano notched her second goal of the day. UCSB had the 9-7 lead with 2:43 to play, but the Lancers would rally and tie the game at nine with just over one minute left.
Before the game could finish UCSB was forced to forfeit as Head Coach Wolf Wigo was given a red card with 29 seconds left in the game. Officially the Lancers earned a 5-0 victory.
Goalkeeper Ruth Milne was a bright spot among the two losses as she totaled 17 saves in the two games. Winton also posted an impressive weekend totaling four goals which ties her with Buchanan for the team lead.
