No. 8 SDSU Defeats No. 12 UCSB 11-7, but UCSB Goes on to Beat No. 15 UC San Diego

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara started the day off with an 11-7 loss against San Diego State, but redeemed themselves in a later 13-12 win in sudden death against UC San Diego. The Gauchos are now 14-15 overall and 3-8 in MPSF play.

UCSB began the day with a match against San Diego State. SDSU scored the first goal two minutes into the game. The Aztecs hit the back of the net again bringing the score to 2-0 SDSU. The second quarter began with two more goals by the Aztecs. ZiZi Clark tallied the first mark for the Gauchos. The Aztecs rattled the cage twice more. UCSB ended the half with a goal from Amanda Tipton making the score 6-2 at halftime.

The third quarter started off slow. The Aztecs scored again. UCSB retaliated outscoring SDSU 3-1 in the final 2:19 of the period. The score was 8-5 Aztecs at the end of the third quarter. SDSU scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter. UCSB found the back of the net two more times against the Aztecs. Cia Cobb of SDSU scored the final goal ending the game 11-7.

UCSB then took on UCSD Tritons and won in sudden death overtime. UCSB scored two early goals followed by another to lead 3-0 in the first. UCSD's Natalie Hockett put the Tritons on the board with :17 left. The Tritons found the back of the net four times in the second. The Gauchos snuck one more in making the score 5-4, UCSD at the half.

In the third, the game was tied at 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7, but the Tritons scored two more putting them ahead 9-7. UCSB scored right out of the gate to make it 8-9 at the beginning of the fourth. Judy Emaus scored at the 5:52 mark to put UCSD back up 10-8. UCSB's Lindsay Knott scored to make it 10-9 with 5:03 left. UCSD scored again to put themselves ahead 11-9 with 4:38 left. UCSB answered with a goal at 4:08 to come within 11-10 at 4:08. The tying goal was scored by UCSB's Alaina Whitaker with 1:51 left as neither team scored for the remainder of regulation 11-11.

In the first three minutes of overtime UCSB scored first at 1:04 as Sarah Kovach put UCSB ahead 12-11. In the second three minute session, Michelle Perkins scored at the 1:08 mark to tie it at 12-12. In sudden death overtime, UCSB got the possession off the sprint and called timeout to set up a play. Kovach then scored her sixth goal of the game and gave UCSB the victory.

UCSB continues action next Friday against USC at the Gauchos' Campus pool.
