LONG BEACH, Calif. - Top-seeded Cal State Northridge (28-7, 4-1) defeated third-seeded UC Santa Barbara (18-11, 3-2) by a score of 11-5 on Saturday in round two of the Big West Tournament.
The Gauchos put themselves in a hole early, going down 3-0 in the first quarter. Midway into the third the Matadors picked up another goal, stretching their lead to four. Late in the second UCSB finally fired back, scoring three straight in the final two minutes of the second and bringing the score to 4-3 at half.
In the third, UCSB's offense faded out and Northridge went on a four-goal run, giving the Matadors an 8-3 lead going into the fourth. In the final period, the Gauchos found the net twice, but it was too little, too late, as CSUN notched three more goals of its own to move past the Gauchos in round two.
Due to the loss, UCSB will play top-seeded Pacific on Sunday at 2:00 pm for third place in the Big West Tournament.
