Fifth-seeded San Diego State beat the 12 seed Santa Barbara in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on Thursday afternoon, 13-11. No. 5 San Diego State used a five-goal showing in the third quarter with five different players scoring one goal each to give the Aztecs a 10-8 lead that turned into a close 13-11 victory in the second game of the tournament over No. 14 UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos will play 13 seed Pacific tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Tempe, Ariz.
Santa Barbara began the game with the upper hand after scoring three goals to San Diego's two in the first quarter. The tables turned in the second stanza with the Aztecs scoring three goals and the Gauchos two to knot the score at five at the end of the first half.
The Aztec offense exploded for five goals in the third period while the Gauchos only put up three goals. San Diego State had a 10-8 lead heading into the last quarter remaining in regulation. UCSB and SDSU each scored three goals in the fourth period but SDSU's lead came in handy and the Aztecs won the game, 13-11.
Senior utility ZiZi Clark, junior attacker Lindsay Knott, senior center Sarah Kovach and senior defender Aimee Stachowski all had two goals in the loss while junior goalie Jenny Gonzales had six goals.
