Arizona State Narrowly Defeats UCSB, 10-9 at MPSF Tournament

April 28, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - Eight-seed Arizona State outscored the Gauchos in the final period of play to defeat Santa Barbara, 10-9 in the third game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Utilities freshman Christie Clark and sophomore Gillian Morgan led all Gaucho scorers with three goals each.

The two teams matched each other's scoring in the first three periods of play and Arizona State's Addison Doud scored once in each quarter of play. Sun Devil Kelly Phelps' outside shot in the fourth put the Sun Devils ahead to give them the extra edge to take the game. The Gauchos, who led most of the game, got hat tricks from Christie Clark and Gillian Morgan, but it was not enough as Caylinn Wallace stopped six shots in the final quarter to end up with 12 on the game in the victory while Jenny Gonzales recorded nine in the loss.

Arizona State will go on to play at 10:20 am Sunday for 9th place while UC Santa Barbara plays at 9 am Sunday for 11th place against Cal State Northridge.
