SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UCSB senior women's water polo player Claire Buchanan has been named the Golden 1/UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week after helping lead the Gauchos to three wins and a 2-0 start in Big West play.
Buchanan opened the week with a career-high five goals in the Gauchos' 12-5 win over visiting Brown last Tuesday. She also drew five ejections in the victory.
On Saturday, she helped UCSB to a 9-5 win in its Big West opener against the league's defending regular season co-champions Pacific. She scored the first of her three goals against the Tigers just four minutes into the game, breaking a 1-1 tie and putting the Gauchos ahead. UCSB did not relinquish its lead from that point forward. She also drew four ejections in the win and tallied a steal.
In Sunday's game with UC Davis, she was one of nine players to score as the Gauchos defeated the Aggies, 9-5. Buchanan scored the first goal of the game with 5:58 on the clock in the first quarter to give UCSB a 1-0 lead. The Gauchos never trailed during the contest. Against Davis, she drew five ejections and posted a steal.
For the week, she had nine goals, 14 ejections earned and three steals. The senior is currently amidst a season-best seven-game scoring streak.
The Gauchos have improved to 19-8 on the season and carry a 2-0 Big West record into this Saturday's league game at Cal State Northridge.
