This Week In Water Polo
UC Santa Barbara will wrap up the regular season this week with a trio of games, including its final Big West game against Long Beach State. The Gauchos will visit nonconference foe Loyola Marymount on Friday before heading to LBSU for a twin bill on Saturday, facing the 49ers and then Sonoma State in a neutral site game.
For The Record
UCSB currently holds a 13-10 overall record and is 0-4 in Big West action. The Gauchos traveled to UC Irvine last weekend where they suffered an 11-10 overtime loss to the Anteaters. The game was the Gauchos' first this season to go into overtime. UCSB is currently ranked 18th in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-20 Coaches Poll.
Cailee Racks Them Up
Sophomore Cailee Kilroy led the Gauchos in last week's contest with Irvine, tallying a career-high four goals. The four goals more than doubled her count for the season - she now has seven on the year.
Senior Gillian Morgan - UCSB's single season goals leader - brought her 2009 total to 69 goals on Saturday with two goals in the loss to UCI. Her career count currently stands at 191, which ranks second all-time behind Kelley Tiffany's school record of 213 career goals. Morgan has scored in all but two games this season and has had 17 multiple goal showings. In addition to leading the team in goals, she is second with 13 assists, tied for first with 16 steals and third with 28 earned penalties or ejections.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea Carrillo posted a career-high 15 goals against UC Irvine. She is currently averaging 6.9 saves per game and has had double-digit saves on two occasions this season.
No. 2 Stunna
Junior Lizzie Rouleau is currently second on the team with 27 goals this season and leads the squad with her 34 earned penalties or ejections. Rouleau has scored in 17 of the Gauchos' games this season and has had seven multiple-goal performances.
Tipton Takes Them Out
Senior Amanda Tipton earned an impressive five ejections in addition to her goal during Saturday's game. Tipton has totaled 13 goals this season, bringing her career total to 82, which ranks 14th all-time on the Gaucho career scoring list. She is fourth on the team with 26 earned penalties or ejections and leads the squad with seven field blocks.
Big West Update
UCSB will have its last chance to tally a Big West win on Saturday against Long Beach State. The Gauchos have already defeated the 49ers twice this season on Feb. 22 and Mar. 7 in nonconference games - both times by a one goal margin. UCI currently leads the conference standings with a 3-0 mark.
Oh What A Difference A Year Makes!
UCSB is currently averaging 10 goals per game offensively, over a two goals-per-game improvement from its 7.89 average last season. The Gauchos also allow an average of 8.3 goals-per-game, which is 1.3 goals fewer than their 2008 average.
Next weekend, the Gauchos will head to the inaugural Big West Conference Championships being hosted by Pacific. The tournament will be played April 24-26 and the seedings into the tournament will be determined by each team's regular season finish.
